This is the Stuff

From 2008-2020 I was a member of a church band, Rock of Faith. We provided music for Masses, weddings, and other celebrations. I played acoustic guitar and sang, primarily as back up. We had several women in the group who were very good singers and handled most of the leads.

In 2011, a nearby parish organized a music festival, and our band was invited to perform. Since it was a festival and not a Mass, we weren't limited to playing hymns. So our leader decided we would play "This is the Stuff" by popular Christian recording artist Francesca Battistelli.

The song featured a ukulele

At practice one night the leader asked me if I know how to play ukulele. I told him I did not, but I was willing to give it a try. A few days later I went to my favorite music store, bought a ukulele and a ukulele book, learned the chords for the song, and practiced playing it.

And then we performed it at the festival. Someone in the audience recorded us.

By the way, the young lady who sang lead was a high school student. She later went to college and majored in musical theater, and then moved to New York City where she works professionally as a singer, dancer, and actress. Such talent!
