Abbey visit (haiku)

An island on the grounds of the Abbey of the Genesee

We drove down to the Abbey of the Genesee today - joining the monks for Sext and buying some bread (this abbey is the one that produces "Monk's Bread"). The monks are getting so much older - though I noted with pleasure some young ones as well.

My former spiritual director was there for prayers - in a wheelchair. I miss our visits.

I scribbled a couple of haiku:

Bell for noon prayers -
a procession of monks
and their walkers.

At the abbey
listening to the porter
discussing silence.

As we bought our bread, I noted that the abbey store sells products produced at other monasteries, and suggested that they consider selling the great beer produced by the monks at the Spencer abbey in New England. The clerk/volunteer said that they'd need some sort of a special license to do that. But she added that they do bring in some of that beer for the monks for special occasions.

Lucky monks!
