Stand Out for Life, May 2019
We held the latest Stand Our for Life today. I stopped counting at 120 participants - though someone else estimated by the end 150-200 people took part.
There were even four counter-protesters, one of whom dressed in a version of The Handmaid's Tale character so popular among the pro-choicers these days (a fictional character from an anti-Christian novel that seems appropriate). They tried to get people arguing and to offer some pro-choice chants, but they got lost in the praying, preaching, and hymn singing by the pro-lifers.
Father Tony Mugavero led us in a rosary.
Pastor Tim Lindsay summed up why pro-choicers have gotten so incensed lately, beginning with the Kavanaugh hearings. The are upset that pro-lifers seem to be winning.
The local media, which covered a smaller pro-choice event earlier in the week, was, of course, not there.

That Handmaid
At our May 25 Stand Out for Life, a woman dressed in a version of The Handmaid'sTale costume came to be a counter protester (there were four pro-choicers counter-protesting, while there were more than 120 pro-lifers praying and singing outside Planned Parenthood).
It struck me that it was fitting that one of the symbols of the pro-choicers now is a fictional character from an anti-Christian novel. After all, Planned Parenthood and the pro-choice movement rely on fiction to deceive women and the culture, and pro-choicers often spout anti-Christian slogans and arguments.
As for this woman, she kept trying to argue and agitate, but she seemed like a sad, hurting individual. I said a prayer for her.
(In a side note: Notice - despite attempts by media and pro-choice leaders to label pro-lifers as violent, these ladies felt comfortable to mingle with - and even debate with - a large crowd of pro-lifers. They were not harrassed, called names, sworn at, etc.)

Joe Dady Goes Home
Joe Dady passed away yesterday at age 61 after a battle with cancer. His death is a loss for the Rochester music scene, Irish music, folk music, and me.
I loved the Dady Brothers' music, having seen them a number of times. I followed Joe and the Dady Brothers on Facebook as well.
They started out in the 70s doing folk music, but soon became well-known for their Irish music. They led a number of tours to Ireland. They were mainstays in the local Irish and music scenes, giving concerts, playing festivals, and doing multiple benefits for local groups and organizations.
Joe was a composer - the video above, a tribute to another of my favorite musicians, Pete Seeger, is one of his - a multi-instrumentalist, a performer (not just a musician), and a teacher.
A few years back I snapped some pictures at a parish benefit concert they gave.
Rest in peace, Joe.
Thank you for all the laughs and great music.

Be the moon
The moon
does not boast
of its own light,
but rather,
humbly reflects
the light
of the sun.
Be the moon.

I'm positive ...
Success and failure
are ultimately less important
than the ongoing pursuit
of a worthy goal.
- Pax et Bonum
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about a book that consisted of daily tweets from someone who got the book published largely because he is famous, and not necessarily the wisdom or quality of the tweets.
I obviously didn't think highly of the book - though I also did not condemn it as awful.
However, it did inspire me to try to post daily positive tweets of my own.
It's hard! I'm sarcastic and somewhat cynical by habit. So this exercise is a challenge, but one I believe will ultimately be good for me.
Here are the first 13:
Each new day
is a new opportunity
to recognize and celebrate
God's love in our lives.

we are loved

It's cool, damp, cloudy.
But flowers are blooming.
Focus on the flowers
and the beauty of creation.

When I wake these days
the first thing
I hear is the birds
sharing the gift
God gave them.
Alleluia!
- Pax et Bonum
I woke up,
I could get out of bed,
I had a bed
I could walk
my dog was waiting, wagging her tail:
I start the day with so many things
for which to be thankful.
And there's so much more to come.
Alleluia!

Suddenly this morning
I remembered
the sound
of an old friend's
laughter
and smiled.
- Pax et Bonum
Now when life starts to get you down,
no use sittin' there wearin' a frown.
Life is such a precious thing,
and remember the blues is just something to sing.
- Pax et Bonum
Each time I talk
with a loved one
let me
keep in mind
that what I say
may be
the last thing
I say to that person.

Breathe deep
the cool morning air
that fills your lungs
and your soul.
- Pax et Bonum
Every raindrop
is an ocean
teeming with life
and potential.
- Pax et Bonum
in the fog
a creature in the distance
adds mystery
to the morning walk
- Pax et Bonum
Let us feed
our souls
and our minds
only with what
is true,
and good,
and beautiful,
- Pax et Bonum
To be truly alive
one must be
passionate
about at least one thing,
just make sure
that thing
is worthy
of that passion.
- Pax et Bonum
I will continue to write them.
And I will continue to try to be more positive.
Maybe I should stop reading the news!
