I began the year with the goal of reading five Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy L. Sayers. I just finished my first one: Strong Poison.
It details how Wimsey met Harriet Vane, who was on trial for murder, fell in love with her, and managed to prove her innocence.
How he discovers the real murderer, and the method used, was not quite satisfactory, but it wasn't bad. And the characters make up for this weakness.
He proposes, and she says no. But I know in a later book they do marry.
Their relationship served as the topic of one of my clerihews:
Lord Peter Wimsey
was never deterred by evidence flimsy,
but his confidence suffered years of strain
when faced with the mystery of Harriet Vane.
