We celebrated Tartan Night with the Scottish Heritage Society of the Rochester Area Saturday night.
Tartan Day is a North American celebration of Scottish heritage on April 6, the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. The Declaration of Arbroath was written by Scottish barons and addressed to Pope John XXII.It was King Robert I's response to his excommunication for disobeying the pope's demand in 1317 for a truce in the First War of Scottish Independence. The letter asserted the antiquity of the independence of the Kingdom of Scotland, denouncing English attempts to subjugate it. The papacy rescinded King Robert Bruce's excommunication and thereafter addressed him using his royal title.
The Rochester dinner was a grand time!
