While searching for a particular song in my music files I stumbled across a song I wrote years ago. It was a commentary on the selfishness of the 80s, but still seems relevant today.
I played it a few times in public, including with my late friend Dave Nittler, with whom I wrote another song, "Maggie."
Looking Out for Number One
When
I was a young man
I
was taught that golden rule:Do unto others
Before they do it to you
Oh
it ain’t easy
Looking
out for number one. It’s a long, hard, lonely life
Until it’s done.
You
say that you love me
Let
me tell you what to do:Everything that I want
Until I say we’re through.
Oh
it ain’t easy
Looking
out for number one. It’s a long, hard, lonely life
Until it’s done.
You
gotta give me all your money
Your
jewels and all your rings,And if they don’t come freely
I’ll just steal everything.
Oh
it ain’t easy
Looking out for number one.
It’s
a long, hard, lonely lifeLooking out for number one.
Until it’s done.
You
say that I’m evil,
You
say that I’m cruel. If you must know the truth,
I don’t care what you think.
Oh
it ain’t easy
Looking
out for number one. It’s a long, hard, lonely life
Until it’s done.
It’s
a long, hard, lonely life
Looking
out for Number One.
I gotta record this one and upload it to Youtube somehow!
Pax et bonum
