I am reasonably sure that Robert J. Strong is your great grandfather, based on the documentary evidence. Attached you will find the marriage record for son Roy, in which he names his parents.
Also attached is his draft record, which states he was born in Walton (Delaware County). These are attached to the Ancestry tree I shared with you. The 1900 US census (not attached) lists Robert and Althea Strong living in Walton. Roy was born the following year (1901) and his dad died the same year (1901).
There is a clear connection between Robert and Alanson, though, as you can see in the 1892 NY state census, also attached. Check the second column, Alanson is there with his son John, John's wife Mary and son Robert.
